Abbaye de Bonneval

Chocolate and quiet contemplation in the Aveyron

The place

The Abbaye de Bonneval is a Cistercian abbey tucked into the north of the Aveyron. Founded in 1147, the site is, before anything else, a place of prayer. It is a stop on the road to Santiago de Compostela. You can also stay for several days and use the abbey as a place to settle the mind.

To the food for the soul, the sisters add food for the body. Since 1878 they have been making chocolates by hand. The shop is built around chocolate: bars, bonbons, "bouteilles à la liqueur" (small liqueur-filled bottles), and other small treats besides.

To meet the chocolate makers, visit the abbey. You can wander along the old walls, sit for a while in the church, then head to the shop. The abbey is also the starting point for plenty of walks in the surrounding countryside. Orders can be placed directly through the site, or with stockists in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
