Frequently asked questions

About spirits

What spirits are made in France?

Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados, fruit eaux-de-vie, marc, and a fresh wave of gin, absinthe, agricultural rum (the French Antilles) and regional liqueurs.

How do you read a label?

Look for origin markers (AOC, AOP, IGP), the distillation method (Charentais pot still, column still) and the alcohol strength. "100% raw material" means no neutral spirit has been added.

How should you taste at home?

A tulip glass, cellar temperature (15-18°C) for fine eaux-de-vie, well chilled for gin and some liqueurs. A drop of water can open up the aromatics of stronger spirits.
