Frequently asked questions

About craft beers

What is a craft beer?

In France, the label brasserie indépendante means a capped annual output and genuine independence from the big brewing groups. Other useful markers are bière vivante (living beer), unfiltered and unpasteurised.

Can you visit the breweries?

Often, yes. Most run tours with a tasting, sometimes by booking. Shop opening hours are noted on each listing.

How do you store a craft beer?

Cool, away from light, upright for bottle-conditioned beers. Drink fresh beers (IPAs, witbiers) young; stouts and barley wines age well.
